Since 1996 the Little Heroes Foundation, formerly known as the McGuinness McDermott Foundation, has been supporting service and support improvements for children living with cancer and serious illness

Our Vision is for diagnosed children to rediscover and enjoy their irrepressible enthusiasm for life.

Our Mission is to identify service and capital improvement  projects so that every critically ill child is treated with utmost respect and provided with the very best care.

As we approach our fifteenth anniversary, we have contributed over $11 million dollars to the Women’s & Children’s Hospital and other funding programs to make a genuine and enduring contribution to a more fulfilling life for children living with cancer and serious illness.

Our latest fundraising efforts have been focused primarily on allocating $2 million towards the establishment of a new single point of service centre – Haematology & Oncology Centre – and $1 million towards a new MRI Unit at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital.

But our support for the children goes further than that; because cancer diagnosis for a child lasts a lifetime and is an emotionally stressful experience leaving the family feeling isolated, bewildered and concerned about the next steps they should take.

Today most children are successfully treated for cancer; childhood cancer survival rates have increased dramatically, from 25% in the late 1960s, to approximately 75% in 2009; however the treatment can cause side effects known as late effects that cause months, or even years, after treatment is completed.
